La Geriatría es una especialidad médica dedicada al estudio y atención de los padecimientos agudos y crónicos del adulto mayor, definido como aquél sujeto mayor de 65 años de edad. Dentro del espectro de padecimientos más comúnmente vistos, tenemos las alteraciones del ánimo, memoria y marcha; éstas pueden ir desde una reacción de ajuste (normal) ante un evento desafortunado hasta problemas serios como depresión, demencia o caídas. Para ello, la valoración geriátrica integral forma parte crucial en el conocimiento del paciente. Ésta involucra diversos aspectos sociales, psicológicos, ambientales, cognitivos y funcionales del individuo además del proceso salud-enfermedad.

Geriatrics is a medical specialty dedicated to the study and care of acute and chronic conditions in the elderly, defined as those over 65 years of age. Within the spectrum of conditions most commonly seen, we have mood, memory and gait disturbances; These can range from a (normal) adjustment reaction to an unfortunate event to serious problems such as depression, dementia, or falls. For this, the comprehensive geriatric assessment is a crucial part of understanding the patient. This involves various social, psychological, environmental, cognitive and functional aspects of the individual in addition to the health-disease process.

En el sujeto aparentemente sano, se recomienda una valoración inicial preventiva a partir de los 65 años, con el objetivo de establecer los recursos y pautas médicas para un envejecimiento saludable y detectar oportunamente las enfermedades (tamizaje).

In the apparently healthy subject, an initial preventive assessment is recommended from the age of 65, in order to establish the resources and medical guidelines for healthy aging and to detect diseases in a timely manner (screening).

Dentro del campo del Médico Internista, se encuentran diversas enfermedades no quirúrgicas que afectan al individuo adulto (mayor de 18 años de edad) y, cuyo manejo oportuno ayuda a evitar la aparición de patologías más graves y crónicas; representa al médico ideal para encabezar las estrategias recomendadas para prevenir enfermedad o detección oportuna de la misma (tamizaje o  prevención primaria). Además se ofrece la posibilidad de establecer el riesgo cardiovascular pre-operatorio y realizar un seguimiento previo y posterior a una cirugía en forma integral.

Within the field of Internal Medicine, there are various non-surgical diseases that affect the adult individual (over 18 years of age) and whose timely management helps to avoid the appearance of more serious and chronic pathologies; represents the ideal physician to spearhead recommended strategies to prevent disease or early detection of it (screening or primary prevention). In addition, it offers the possibility of establishing pre-operative cardiovascular risk and carrying out comprehensive monitoring before and after surgery.

Especialista en Medicina Interna (2010) y Geriatría (2012) por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, con sede en el Instituto Nacional de ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. Rotación formativa por el Servicio de Cuidados Paliativos en el Consorci Sanitari Integral del Hospital General de l´Hospitalet, Barcelona, España (2011), y  Diplomado de Cardiogeriatría (2016). Certificado por los Consejos Mexicanos de Medicina Interna y Geriatría. Miembro Activo de la Asociación de Médicos del Instituto Nacional de Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (AMINNSZ), del Colegio Nacional de Medicina Geriátrica y ex-miembro de la Asociación Médica del Centro Médico ABC.

Training rotation by the Palliative Care Service in the Consorci Sanitari Integral del Hospital General de l´Hospitalet, Barcelona, ​​Spain (2011), and Cardiogeriatrics diploma (2016). Certified by the Mexican Councils of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Active Member of the Association of Physicians of the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Nutrition (AMINNSZ), of the National College of Geriatric Medicine and Former Member of the Medical Association of the ABC Medical Center.
